The following are RAISE strategies used in the classroom:
The information covers handouts, lessons, and teaching strategies used to develop an RA classroom.
In the first two weeks of an RA classroom it is important to create a safe social atmosphere for students. One very important piece in an RA class is to make students realize quality reading strategies they already use. A best practice strategy is to create student led reading strategies. The picture to the left is an artifact a class has created for reading strategies. Students write down the three they use the most and rank them in order from most to least used. It is an excellent opportunity to establish routines in the classroom as well as providing students the modeling that their work will be honored. It is essential early in the school year to establish a high quality feedback cycle for students.
Example of Student Work:
To see examples of a completed Evidence/Clarify worksheet download the evidenceclarify_example file.
Students were given this sheet and had to clarify their statements and than exchanged with another group and find evidence for the other group.
To see the strategies of Talking to the Text download the file raise_talk_to_the_text.
Students were assigned an article and were told to talk to the text. (RA strategy) Students have been taught this strategy early on. This is an example of second semester work. Also provided is a model copy that was used in class. Utilizing a reciprocal model strategy helps keep students from just going through the motions.
**A "Learning From Student Work" form and analysis can be found in the Lead Teacher tab. (This is designed to evaluate the lesson in RA)**

Walk about reviews can be used for numerous topics. It gets students moving around the room and interacting with one another. Student will input information where there is no box underneath the topic setting the teacher creates. Students will than find other members of the class to expand or provide text reference to support or extend the information. It has been used in my classroom for the following review activities:
-Bios on major leaders/people in the historical event of study
-Reviewing supreme court cases: Constitutional question, precedent, constitutional evidence
-Overall review of the chapter: Themes, People, Terms
-Creating an essay: Student creates thesis. Other students find facts. Each box represents a paragraph for the essay.
