Mr. Byram's RA Classroom
As a former high school social studies teacher it was my main goal to provide students with the tools to be successful lifelong learners. All students, if taught Reading Apprenticeship (RA) strategies will benefit in reading comprehension skills, but more importantly the ability to understand their thought process to analyze and apply information. Social Sciences demand a great deal of reading comprehension along with the technology/information age that we live in today. By implementing RA strategies students will be able to understand the metacognitive process they go through in analyzing information and implement higher level strategies. To simplify this last statement: students will be given clear strategies to make the "Invisible" learning process "Visible". The RA framework utilized in my classroom align with our nation's common core standards and can be implemented into any learning environment. From a teacher stance, the RA strategies students learn provides a better learning community in the classroom, confidence/resilience on high stakes tests, and most importantly development of strong self motivated learners.
